Yes, seems like a good deal for a productivity machine.

I bought it used. Went through dozens of "fixes" And I got it down to black screening just once per night but it was happening every 10 minutes with the default windows and Acer apps installed

Would you say I could build a desktop better than this for the same price?

Got this deal the last time it came up for $600, don't remember how long ago - couple months? Anyways, no issues with it. Works pretty well for light games but couldn't give you any benchmarks. I honestly can't complain though, it's easy enough to toss in a backpack and take with me. For what it's worth, I used it on a dedicated Space Engineers server and didn't really get any significant processing or graphical issues but I also have a larger blower style laptop stand under it running at 1k rpm keeping it in the 60-65c range. Other titles are super light that I could run them on a 780m, so they're not worth mentioning but it performed as expected.

First of all 4050 laptop never was priced around $1850, so don't get fooled by the regular price. Secondly, with all the ongoing sales. There are some options that are brand new instead of refurb. Ex: The MSI laptop with 4050 that is posted earlier this week.

I too bought a refurbished i7 acer model with the same black screen. After stupid runaround from Acer support from installing various fixes/patches, I decided to take apart and re-apply thermal paste on the cpu. Fixed 100%
