Since we are still in hurricane season it's always worth considering having some form of window/portable air conditioner stored in the garage ready to set up if you are in an area that gets hit by them and have had extended power outages in the past. However if you're wanting something you can run on a generator I would have a hard time recommending anything over like 10k BTU due to the power draw and the cost of a generator you'd need to run anything larger plus the refrigerator. While 8-10k may not be able to keep a whole house cool like your actual home ac they are fantastic for keeping humidity down and instead of it being 93 degrees and miserable in the house during the day it might be 83 and way more tolerable humidity. And you'd be able to get it down to 75 at night with it running basically 24/7. I had an 8k BTU window unit running on a 2000w inverter generator during hurricane Beryl at a family member's house who was without power for 8 days, and it kept it comfortable to be inside during the hot afternoons.Friedrich makes good ac units, but I've never seen a portable ac design like the 8k model before. I bet it would work pretty well but would be pulling air conditioned air out of the room it's in and pushing it outside with the single hose design for the condenser coil.
