I bought Photoshop CS6 right before it was phased out and dropped something like $600 or $700 on it. It still works today, but it's heavily outdated. Back then you would buy the software (like Lightroom 1 for $300) and then pay an upgrade every year (~$150) or whenever you needed the newest version. I bought every version from 1-5 (6?), spending about a grand on it alone, and while it still works today, it's again heavily outdated.
The $8/month this plan costs for Photoshop + Lightroom and all of the updated features, is actually worth it. I don't like to support adobe, but out of all the other photo softwares being sold, the monthly cost is usually $15-30 or $200-300 to purchase (and you're stuck with the current version).
I disagree with some of Adobe's business models and tricking consumers, but the price they charge for PS + Lightroom is actually a hell of a deal for anyone wanting industry-level software, whether they're a pro or a consumer who wants to edit their photos
I've been looking for alternatives, I switched from Premiere to DaVinci Resolve cold turkey one night hand haven't looked back. It's been a struggle, but DaVinci is better in my opinion, but some of it is stupid (different conversation for a different thread).
My full adobe suite is about to expire in a few days and I've been looking for a Ps and Lr alternative, but I just have so much experience with both, it's really hard for me to switch.
Timing is perfect, I'm going to jump on this now. At the very least, it buys me another year to find an alternative.

Does the 12 months start at purchase from said vendor or at redemption of the code?
It's at redemption. But they don't stack anymore. So if you have a current subscription, it will start a new one that runs concurrently

A yearly plan can be stacked, I just extended my existing account ~5 minutes ago. It only works if the plan types are identical though ( 20GB cannot be extended with 1 TB)
If you have one and use a code for the other, it will not stack and instead run concurrently. I do not know how you can tell from the code which is which, and I doubt the retailer knows and/or cares. You're probably safe if you only buy from one retailer. But don't use this code if you've bought from B&H in the past.
