LOVE LOVE John Hughes' work.

This just a small sample of his clean, sublime and fun movies.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, STOP MAKING DVDs!!

Blu-Ray should be the bare minimum for discs now.

Many of us are oh so complete with dvd and 1080p, blu-ray isn't as universally preferred as you seem to think. Lotta the best movies were made before 4k and are best suited for the resolution they were produced for.
The movies "made before 4K" were mostly shot on film, which doesn't have a specific resolution. Charlie Chaplin would look better on 4K than a crappy DVD.

I agree. He was a great filmmaker, and his work deserves to be seen in a better format than this 480i SD version. (Pan & Scan? It doesn't say. )

One could probably stream better copies for free (with ads.)

So then the movies made during VHS or Laser Disc should continue to be made on those platforms?
Give me a break.

That's like saying because old cars function better with lesser quality fuel that gas stations should continue to offer a lower grade for the few model T owners out there.

That's absolutely ridiculous. First of all, standard DVD can't do 1080p. A standard DVD is 720 x 480 pixels for NTSC. [edit" perhaps you meant "DVD, and 1080p/blu-ray].

What do you mean "best suited for the resolution they were produced for"? Are you saying that cinematographers shooting "Dr. Zhivago" said, "Listen guys, the important thing is to focus on how this looks on a 1960s Philco console TV." No, with few exceptions, movies, particularly of the DVD and prior era, were filmed for the virtual infinite resolution to look good on a 65 ft wide screen.

Even many TV shows were filmed. That's why we can watch "Star Trek TOS" or "The Waltons" in ultra-high definition.

Did you know DVDs are basically 480p?
