Are you saying that cinematographers shooting "Dr. Zhivago" said, "Listen guys, the important thing is to focus on how this looks on a 1960s Philco console TV." No, with few exceptions, movies, particularly of the DVD and prior era, were filmed for the virtual infinite resolution to look good on a 65 ft wide screen.
Even many TV shows were filmed. That's why we can watch "Star Trek TOS" or "The Waltons" in ultra-high definition.
