So, it looks like the hinge mechanism has been completely redone, it no longer has a secondary hinge for the presser. I don't know if that's a durability improvement, but the precisely machined secondary hinge is the magic sauce for the earlier version. I'm not saying this one isn't good - I've found OXO to have build quality far better than their relative price would suggest, compared to "higher end" kitchen products - but this one isn't really a continuation of the one I have and love.

I found an older version of this press on clearance at a B&M around 15 years ago, and I still use it a few times a week. I'm not sure if the machining is still the same on the hinges, but the prior version is the best garlic press I've owned, has better than some more expensive ones.

It has developed a few spots on edge welds that rust in the dishwasher - I usually just dab on a drop of olive oil after washing - but I love it. Solid and smooth compression, and while I don't usually do this, strong enough to press unpeeled cloves and then just pull out the peels. The one Cuisinart press I have fails that test.

We warrantied an older Oxo garlic press that broke for this one two years ago. Overall, it's a great garlic press. The tolerances could be a little tighter (some garlic gets out along the sides of the presser) but not as much as other brands. Cleaning is pretty easy but sometimes a little garlic gets caught in the pressing handle which is too small to get a sponge/my fingers into. This is definitely an excellent value if you're looking for a new garlic press.

Smush the clove with a knife blade and chop. No need for a press. Lots of the garlic juice (flavor) is lost when using this
