Why is the heel so odd
More surface area on the heel, more cushion to absorb impact energy, also the heel extension could improve downhill stability by digging your heels in.

That is 100% why the heel is shaped like that. They used to sell a downhill race shoe with similar heel, and that was what their engineering folks said.
