Spend the extra $120 and grab the TCL Q7 on sale at Best Buy. It's a FAR superior TV. 144hz, FALD, much brighter, better image processing, etc. It's double the value of TV in OP in every way.

Even the Panasonic (if available) is about $170 more and significantly better. The only downsides with that TV is the lack of high refresh rate and FALD for gaming, and BuyDig being a hassle to deal with with broken TVs.

Thanks for your reply. I almost bought it trying to be cheap. The family room tv had 3-4 detached diffusers driving me crazy. Opened the old Samsung up and chickened out trying to repair it. Only occasionall steaming tv watchers in a relatively bright room.

Local dimming and VRR can't be turned on simultaneously. VRR is important for smooth gaming on current generation consoles and PC gaming, so local dimming is essentially unusable while gaming. It works fine while watching TV/movies.

vrr=gsync/freesync right?

would one still be able to do vsync to a low enough stable rate like 75? ie with a high powered gpu.

No. Gsync and Freesync are brands for their implementation of VRR (Variable Refresh Rate). They're monitor implementations, not done by the GPU. VRR is disabled on the TV when local dimming is enabled, so the TV is stuck at either 60hz or 120hz, and you'll see stuttering when the refresh rate isn't exactly 60 or 120fps.

I hate how QLED and OLED look so alike at a glance, it constantly has me clicking...

This toshiba tv also has FALD but number of local dimming zones is only 48 which is much lesser than 200 zones available in TCL Q7. For the price the picture quality is good if not great.
