Why do people use this over like the little gel packs ?
There are a couple reasons, I'm assuming. One is just that it's what people are used to. The liquid or powder detergent is also probably more cost efficient and offers flexibility in how much detergent is used. There's probably an environmental reason too. But I expect the main reason that someone would actively be against pods is because they saw the video below, which basically says that dishwashers have 2 cycles and the pods only really work in the second cycle, which diminishes the effectiveness of your dishwasher. https://youtu.be/_rBO8neWw04

I am an avid follower of the YouTube channel you linked and this is the main reason I use either powder or gel for the pre wash cycle, along with a pod for the main wash. I have done this for a few years and seems to really work well. You don't need much detergent for the pre wash, so this bottle lasts me over a year.
