It appears that the Smart Sensors themselves do not incur a monthly cost - but it does look like a subscription is required if you plan to use the "Smart Sensor for doors and windows" to pause your HVAC when an open window/door is detected as open (but simply alerting that they're open is free and without monthly cost)

Basically I was looking at buying an additional 2-pack of sensors which are on sale for about $79.99 at most retailers anyway after having purchased the Costco deal - so at an additional $30 I figured why not dip my toes into additional parts of the ecosystem.
