Friends don't let friends buy Linksys. Just wait for the update that cripples your router completely. Yes, I'm still pretty bitter about the Velop after how much it cost.

I'm just here to learn. When did WiFi get so complicated? We don't use any meshb systems, and the entire house works fine on a single 10 year old router which covers more than 3500sqft. And only cost about $90 at the time. Why would one upgrade to such an expensive and complex system? just curious...
It's really not that complicated though?

The ultra-fast speeds come on the 5ghz band, which does not penetrate walls very well. That 10 year old router is likely using 2.4ghz band, which travels better but is slower. Most new routers offer both bands, with some of the newest ones using 6ghz for even faster data transmission. You have to consider the speed of your Internet connection and your demand for large file transfers inside the network to figure out what will best fit your needs.

The footprint of your house matters, too. My old house was a really long rancher. I needed 3 APs to get reliable 5ghz across the house and the yard. Current house is about the same size, but 3 floors and a wide open garage. I got decent coverage with 1 router excluding the yard that plenty of people would have been fine with. But since I had 3 routers I went ahead and meshed them, but this time using MOCA to network them over coax. The backhaul made a big difference with all the IOT and video streaming going on. I could have gotten away with 2 routers to cover the house. But I needed switch ports in all those locations and I no longer have fringe coverage in the outside extremes of the yard.

Routers are stupid expensive now, if you keep up with the newest standards. After my immortal wrt54g router was retired after a decade of service, I've always bought previous generation equipment to save money. I don't know the difference and most of my devices can't use current standards, anyway.

10 years ago is not as far back as you think. 5ghz dual band was already standard on mainstream routers around 2015, if not earlier. My Asus RT-AC66U is still going strong after all these years.

Which "expensive" system are you referring to? This deal is for a $35 router. Are you talking about mesh systems in general? It depends on the brand and technology. If you get Ubiquiti mesh, it'll be more expensive than TP-Link (which is the cheapest). ASUS is pretty much in the middle, price-wise. And Netgear can range from middle-of-the-road to crazily expensive, depending on which of their products you're looking at. Often a mesh system isn't needed.. folks can get away with a single router and plug in wifi extenders for dead spots with no coverage. Sure, wifi extender won't give you the faster speed, but if you only need maybe 50mbps to read email/surf the web or watch 4K TV (which only requires 25mbps), then it works fine.

A good place to learn about networking is to read this: https://www.wiisfi.com/ It's a good overview of WiFi, best way to ensure network coverage throughout your home, etc. It is a very long document but if you read a section or two every day you will finish it rather quickly. And you will learn a lot of useful information that can help you make a more informed purchase in the future, if/when you decide to upgrade your network equipment.

I think mesh systems are so popular (and can be pricey) because it is marketed as a "convenient" and "simple" solution.. just plug it in and it works! Sometimes, that's true. But other factors can impact performance such as house materials, number of walls/obstructions between the mesh nodes, etc. Ultimately the best connectivity solution is to use wired ethernet. When that's not possible, MoCA (multimedia over coaxial cable) or Powerline (not the best, but better than nothing) can be used to connect a router to a distant access point for very good coverage.

If you'd like to learn even more, go to www.reddit.com [reddit.com] and look at r/homenetworking and read the posts on there. Very experienced people are sharing their knowledge with others, for free. Have fun!

instructions for enabling MESH (thanks to @rbtcordell for the original source):

1-Setup your Main router completely.

2-Plug your child node using the wan port to the main router lan port, wait for a solid purple light on the child node before proceeding

3-Log into your main router web admin.

4-Click on CA at the bottom right.

5-Click on Connectivity and CA Router setup.

6-Click on both Add Wired and Add Wireless nodes buttons. Wait for the Add wireless button to re-enable.

7-Click Done adding Child Nodes and then Apply.

8-Now the child node light should start flashing purple and turn into a mesh mode when it turns blue.

9-Disconnect Ethernet and wait for blue light again.

10-Move node to desired location.

So, ln301 is tri band and uses the third band for the wireless mesh, while ln1101 is dual band according to linksys site. Do you know which band does ln1101 use to communicate with the other mesh nodes including ln301?

Yeah I'd say it's better to pickup another 1301 off eBay or something for around the same price as this
