Saeco was acquired by Philips a while ago so it might not be the same product that he's referring to.
So the more expensive machines are all about "everything else" such as adjustable temps, adjustable pressure, adjustable coffee within each shot, color screen, how good is the milk frothier, materials within such as cooper or stainless or galvinized boiler, etc... this is what really effects the price.
The thing is just like delonghi (which is an Italian company that is WAY bigger then Phillips regarding coffee). I know when you buy a machine like this it needs to be dissented and talked about on reddit (or other places) about all the faults, how to clean it, what do you do when you get an error code, etc... This machine will be the same way.
Before I would buy, I would research which machine is easier to fix and maintain, etc... that is why my bro swears by the Saeco movement... he feels it is the easiest system to maintain and troubleshoot.
Lastly, IMHO... it may take a year or two years but you will get error codes and you will need to troubleshoot your system. Usually it is all about cleaning your system. But watch youtube videos on how to maintain and clean.
Delonghi was a much better experience.
With Philips ownership, Saeco hasn't become much better. In terms of cleaning and reliability, Delonghi is still superior.
Saeco also does not get paid for its technology by other brands. Gaggia uses the same components because both brands are owned by Philips.

Yes it is. the same system. The thing is you can find a four hundred dollar machine and a four thousand dollar machine and they may both use the identical saeco system. Other companies pay Phillips (Saeco) for the rights to use their system.

What about Gaggia? Thats what we have and its been running great for 3 years now doing at least 4 shots per day.
The biggest difference is the consistency... while your machine (assume it is not automatic) makes an excellent espresso there may be slight inconsistency between different shots based on the amount of coffee and the amount of pressure you used to tapper. Me personally, I am not a fan of the automatic espresso machines... to many issues.
It is like you can get one or two error codes at a time and the day you get three codes... we call it a whammy. The code could be "not enough beans" too "you need to clean an area" or "you need to add water"... it is the cleanning of an area where you need to read up on Reddit and see what other people claim is the best place to clean and what is triggering those codes.
AND if you do have a Gaggia Automatic Espresso machine... Gaggia uses the Saeco system in some of its domestic espresso machines (the automatic ones) because Saeco purchased Gaggia in 1999, and both brands are now subsidiaries of Philips. But some companies just purchase the rights to use the Saeco movement. But if your machine is automatic you are using the system that my bro swears by... by being the best one out there for trouble shooting issues.
