Unlimited Starter with USM on Lightspeed is $22.50/month when paid annually ($25 if paid monthly) vs. $25/month (paid monthly) on Google Fi for the Unlimited Standard Plan via this deal.
On USM, you get 10GB hotspot and 70GB high speed data before a 1mbps throttle. USM runs at QCI 7 on the Lightspeed plans. Taxes & fees are included on all USM plans. Smartwatch plans are separate / extra on the USM offering.
On Google Fi, you get 25GB hotspot and 50GB high speed data before a 256kbps throttle. Google Fi runs at QCI 6 priority (meaning your data is prioritized above USM users, T-Mobile essential plans users, and all other T-Mobile MVNO users). That matters when the network is congested, but doesn't matter when it's uncongested. Taxes & fees are extra on all Google Fi plans. Smartwatch plans are included on Google Fi offerings.
Ultimately, the plans are different enough that which one is "better" depends on what each user needs. If you need more total highspeed data or want a lower price, USM is the better option. If you need more hotspot data, prioritized data, or smartwatch compatibility, Google Fi is better.
One size does not fit all in this case.
