Also, Epic has the worst customer service ever. They couldn't figure out how to change an account email that was on a domain being cyber squatted (want a laugh? Google "Rob Monster"). I just finally got back into the account in May after reobtaining my domain name for email. I would not spend another dime there, and if players only spent $255 million on third party games on EGS in 2024, than I am hardly alone. It's the "free stuff" + Fortnite Launcher.

If nothing I listed was real, it would not demonstrably exist. All those things exist. As does how much better Steam is for early access products. Developers routinely look at and reply to comments, questions, and suggestions. Yes, this is also possible on every per-game Discord server, but it highlights the extent to which Steam has ingrained itself.
Watching Epic try to buy their way into chasing them is like watching Peacock or another Z-tier streaming service trying to complete with Netflix and Amazon Prime. First mover advantage is real, and customers are spending their money with the established content providers. Anybody can use whatever "launcher" they want, but there is very little disputing what Steam does beyond being a store front and launcher. They didn't get this far by accident, and I can't even name any software from outside developers that they have paid to not appear on competing services.
Blah, blah, blah. Basically, you're a Steam dead-ender. Good to now - added to ignore.

It's bizarre, but Steam have these hardcore fanboys. They don't seem to want any competition in this space at all, just for Steam to continue to take their cut of 30% for almost the entire PC games industry.
You people act like a Hyundai dealership is going to put downward pressure on a Mercedes Benz location.

will I pass up a good deal on a game I want, but requires clicking a button in a different game launcher? no.
steam is great, no complaints, no issues. but the manufactured outrage some games express at the pure audacity that you might have to have 2-3 other launchers to click play (or buy) on a game is ridiculous.as someone else mentioned, spend a couple hours fine tuning playnite to bring everything under one roof, including emulators/roms. it's so versatile, you can have trailers auto play, full screen mode for a console like experience, even PS5, Xbox, and Switch skins if that's your thing. I'm grateful Steam exists, and certainly the right step in the right direction vs the previous way of buying CD-ROMs and launching .exe files from your desktop- but just because they did it first, doesn't mean that other companies deserve the shame they get for simply- not being steam.
Steam is quite a bit more than a storefront and a launcher. People have 20+ year friends list, workshop support, steam cloud, community pages (though a lot of this is on Discord as well), and authorized key sites provide price competition that you won't find elsewhere.

No one uses steam friends anymore - Discord killed it. Workshop is neat but very far from essential. Steam Cloud has an epic version. community pages are nazi hellholes.
i don't think you listed anything real - Steam CS is also awful awful. The most legitimate use case one can make is 'it's easier to run Windows software on an unsupported operating system using a quasi-legal API translation layer when you use Steam' which doesn't seem.....like a good thing....to me.
I think the number of people who are actually store-partisans are increasingly few and that normal people buy a game wherever it is cheapest.
Plus, people always bring up the idea that we're giving 30% of the cut to Valve, but Valve is one of few companies left in the gaming space that seems to legitimately care for its consumers AND its employees. Are you guys really wanting to give a cut to Epic Games, who is owned 40% by Tencent? Okay, you do you, then.
It's the sort of competition you don't want, because if other store fronts start doing the same, we've end up with a fractured market similar to console industry. Just ask Xbox gamers how it's working out for them. That's even with the benefit of the platform holder subsidizing consoles.
I by far prefer GoG, and if you really care about positive competition, we all should support GoG more. They by far has excellent customer service, great features that are optional i.e. doesn't require their launcher and they have no DRM. Then I like Xbox, with Xbox Play Anywhere, so games work on both console and PC/Windows. Then Steam. Epic Store is not only at the bottom, but it's literally avoid by all measure and ignore games.
As gamers we deserve better than to be manipulated and tricked by Timmy. I encourage you to research more about who you're doing business with.
Feeling a little baited that no platform was mentioned for a PC title deal post that happens be Epic only and not Steam.
The game is exclusively on Epic. It was published by Epic. It'll join Steam the same day Fortnite does (never).

If Epic Store had more power in the marketplace, we'd be so much worse off in the gaming industry. Stop supporting Epic, and start supporting GoG if you want an alternative. Heck, Discord had a store too, which nobody supported and it was killed shortly thereafter. Sadly.
