FYI this has a modified sine wave. With an MSRP of $200 I had hopes for a pure sine wave.

In a Tesla, the 12 V cigarette lighter is connected to the 12 or 16V battery. It is not connected to the high voltage battery that powers the car

Oooh, this could work with a solar setup + battery that has a DC-style output. This could be a way to get a Ryobi battery to charge while on a remote site.

Best I can tell those are not jumper cables but rather allow you to connect to a bare battery. I would have be more excited about this if you could use an 18V as a backup jumper.

Anything over 150 watt power usually needs to be connected directly to a battery, cigarette lighter ports max out usually at 10 amps, so 10A*12V = 120 Watts. You'd blow the car fuse trying to draw 1000W thru the auxilary port.

I just snagged two at my local HD.

The HD website showed the price at $199 and I gave up, but then.... I noticed the words just below the $199 price that said "See In-Store Clearance Price. When I clicked there the price was $50 !!!
The website said 2 in stock.

Went to the store, searched around and came up empty. Finally I asked a store employee where they would be, and he looked on his device then took me to one of the locked cages where 3 of the inverters were located on the very bottom shelf. They were indeed marked 50 bux regular $199. I snagged two and left one. I appreciate the employees assistance.

Got them home and tried one. Neat item that will be very useful, and the other is for a Christmas gift for a family member.

Bottom line: Before giving up, check for the "See In-Store Clearance Price" link below the online price.

Edit: In my brief testing, the only thing I would wish for was if the 12v "lighter plug" would function as a charger to charge the 18v battery while on the road, as well as powering the inverter as needed. Use the 110 inverter at night while parked, then charge the battery during travel in the day. That would be about perfect, IMHO.

I was wondering if I could use this to allow my EV battery to charge or even run something during a power outage. I could connect the inverter to the 12v battery, turn the car on (which charges the 12v battery from the large traction battery that runs the electric motors), and then use it to run something under 1000w. For those of you more steeped in this realm, would welcome thoughts.

tesla, the 12 or 16v battery is connected to and charged by the DC to DC converter under rear passenger seat. Keeping the 12-16v charged up and can support at minimum a 1000 watt inverter, up to 2500 watts and still supply enough amperage to keep the 12-16 nominal. Just hook up your load and put a voltage meter on it, you'll see it doesn't drop into a danger voltage, unless you pull more than the DC 2 DC can supply. Can directly wire under rear seat too. USE A FUSE REGARDLESS. Some good YouTube tutorials out there.

Yes. It's hard to get a good source on what the car inverter is capable of, but for my Chevy Bolt, they generally say the car can do about 1000-1500W. I'm right in the middle of getting mine set up to run a small window AC plus some other items in a power out scenario. I spent a good amount more for a Pure Sine wave inverter with a higher rating and I installed a breaker to max it out somewhere closer to what the car should be able to output.

While this can be accomplished, it takes some more sophisticated electronics to do this - You're taking a 12v source and charging at 18V. Looks like they discontinued the vehicle charger they used to sell, can't find it on the internet anymore.

I have one of the vehicle chargers. Just was thinking it would be neat if the two were combined. But then again, the price tag would be combined probably.....

So modified sine wave is not good? I can't tell the difference. Wish I could understand what this basically does with car.

It doesn't do anything to your car, it's more about what's plugged in to the outlets. If you want to plug basically anything you want into your inverter, then pure sine wave is the way to go. With a modified sine wave, more sensitive electronics tend not to do too well and might behave weirdly or not work at all
that is after prolonged use. this is an item most people wouldn't use daily. someone using a inverter daily like this, would want to get a nicer inverter/power bank

I have used modified sine wave for weeks at a time after a storm for laptops, computers, televisions all sorts of stuff and literally nothing acted weirdly or was adversely affected. I think ne need for pure sine wave inverters is greatly exaggerated by companies selling pure sine wave inverters! Maybe if I was running some lab grade electronics that needed a pure stable power supply but most electronics are designed to run on a very poor and noisy power grid!

I have this exact setup with a Prius Prime. Also have a generator plug adapter to connect to the house will at least have minimal power for some LED lights a gas oven and a gas non blowing furnace

I had a less powerful one of these back in the day and used it to power a crockpot of wings while driving out of state for the Super Bowl. I miss that car
