There are very few cases where you'd need something like this. Almost everthing that has a power adapter can already take anything between 110 to 220 volts. All you need is a simple plug converter.

The thing that my wife needs a converter for this doesn't do - a hairdryer. If anyone has suggestions around that I'd love to hear them.

you can get travel hair dryers that have 110/220 v switch, it is not automatic it is a selector switch. Most hotels do provide a hair dryer these days.
