Ive been SUPER happy with my diy one. Used a cardboard box and tape calling it a prototype lol. Found cheapest filter size at the time, got 20x25x4 merv 13 and some 20x25x1 merv 8 prefilters over them to change out more often. Have filters on 2 sides and rigged my old vornado to blow out the top and after running a few minutes there is a noticable 'freshness' in the room, better than any air purifier I've come across. Id suggest going with 3M (filtrete) or honeywell filters, though. They're worth the premium and can often be found on sale or cheap if you buy a bulk pack. Good luck!

Ok I will say what I always say when people bring up Corsi Rosenthal boxes. They work GREAT. If you live in an area with wildfires or areas where there are times of transient air pollution, it is a great thing to have in these emergencies.

BUT as far as everyday use, they are not only beyond overkill, but they look like incredibly unsightly. If your live somewhere that truly stinks 24/7 and your home decor is such that a box fan with Home Depot air filters duct taped all over it would fit right in, then yeah sure, get duct tapin'!

But even though CR boxes work better than air purifiers, sometimes it's not just about "raw air cleansing for the dollar". A nice looking air purifier has the benefit of doing a very adequate job cleaning the air while being quiet, energy efficient and not gigantic and unsightly.

Yes, the air purifier subreddits will call you a fool for "spending $129 on an air purifier when you can duct tape furnace filters to a box fan for 1/3 of the price"!!!

It doesn't have to be an either or thing. Take out the CR box when you get an AQI alert warning, but if you live somewhere where you need to leave your giant duct taped box fan filter box out all day everyday, consider moving or locating the dead animal in your home causing the smell 😅

Doesn't get much love in air purifier subreddits. I'm going to try a diy CR box.

Corsi–Rosenthal Box. Basically box fan with filters tapped to it. I was debating on making a wood one to make it look decent. More modern ones use pc fans but it makes it more complicated, but quieter.

Exactly, I have one we bought during a renovation. It will increase the fan speed automatically as needed. Sensor seems to work well if I take something out of the oven or a dog walks by it'll automatically increase the fan speed. Cleaning the filters is easy if you have a air compressor and takes about 5 minutes.

I adapted this to make my own laminar flow hood for mycology at home!

these things are awful. I have replaced 4 of the larger size from costco. The sensors either show everything is 100% fine even when other sensors show its not, like when you turn on gas stove or light candles, or they work find till they then only say things are 0%. Now that I'm on my 4th return I'm just going to get something else. I knew it was too good to be true that they detect up to 0.1 micron particles as sensors that do that usually cost more than the entire machine.

Check out cleanairkits.com, but they do cost quite a bit for an air purifier but same concept as the a CR box. I haven't bought one cause of the price. The blue air purifier goes will with house, and that's what im sticking to for now (waiting for another sale)

Have the full size version of this and love it. Had it for well over a year and blew out the filters for the first time back at the start of summer. Good as new. Sensors are very sensitive and automatically increase flow to clean the air. Very quiet. I keep it on the auto setting and it just sets there and goes to work.

If somebody puts something in the microwave or cooks on the gas stove in the kitchen - two rooms down the hall - or somebody takes a shower upstairs and uses a bunch of hair products - it detects a change in the air, whether smoke or chemicals or whatever.

If the sensor reads anything below 90%, you can smell it in the air and understand why it's running. If it died today I'd get another one.

People blasting this thing simply don't know how air purifiers work. And if the sensor reads 0%, you probably have something going on inside your house that needs professional attention that is well beyond the capabilities of any air purifier.
