Holy smokes these jumped. The last versions that went for sale I paid 70 for a pair of bookshelves and 40 for center lol.

The Sony core speakers are an absolute steal. Some of the most transparent speakers anybody makes. The key with these is that you want some kind of preamp or tone control at the front end and a decent subwoofer. They are tuned very, very brightly but brining down the high frequencies is trivial. I used a preamp, but you could easily do this with Audyssey or other DSP solutions.

I built my friend, a 2.1 system with the original Sony floorstanding speakers and an older M&K subwoofer with a $99 Chinese tube preamp in front and it sounds absolutely amazing. Like, truly hi-fi sound rivaling my Canton and Vanderdteen setups for under $300.

The only caveat is that they don't have very wide horizontal dispersal, so they are kind of targeted in their sound. However, depending on your room this could be a non-issue.

Oh too late... I wanted to buy these but ended up finding a used 5.0 set of Polk Signature speakers for $300 instead.
