Do these things actually work, without attracting bears or smelling like a dumpster?

Add browns to soak up the excess moisture if you don't want it smelling like a dumpster. No plastic bins are bear proof.

Or rat proof (they can chew through). Found that one out when putting stuff in my bin the other day.

Dig 1' wide by 2' deep hole in the yard and put your kitchen scraps. Cover the top with a plant pot and a rock to avoid accidentally stepping into it or animals from digging it up. No smell & no maintenance.

I only got in to composting this year after getting in to growing vegetables.

I guess with fall coming up, I'll have plenty of "browns" but it was kind of tough for me to add browns to my compost. I have plenty of peels from veggies and some old yogurt that went bad but I think my ratio of greens to browns was off. I ended up breaking down a few Amazon cardboard boxes and using those as browns and some paper bags I got with fast food and napkins to be the browns.

The fact that my bin doesn't really stink is a good sign, I guess?
