just putting this out there to people, never buy memory until you need it. It general only goes one way with pricing, down.

Too many people jump the gun and buy before they need it, resulting in paying a higher premium to just have space that doesn't get used and continues to go down in price.

yep this doesn't look like a sale price if it's lower everywhere. looks like it's coming down and will probably be less for black Friday. these have been overpriced anyways considered the 4tb goes for around $240 and double the size is usually less than double the price.

This isn't memory and most ssds perform better if they are less than half full. How much performance you lose depends on the drive and the workload but here's an article that goes over it: https://www.xda-developers.com/wh...-your-ssd/

That's exactly what I was thinking. I was really excited to see this 8TB finally at $499 (the SanDisk.com deal) but then I realized I don't really need it this month, and it'll likely be $450 or lower for Black Friday (I would hope).

I hear you, I'm using memory for HD and ram, but i digress. the average consumer is not looking to pay for a half filled side. power users that need peak performance all the time may require this measure but not the average consumer. Nonetheless, the price goes one way, DOWN. zero need to get hot and horny and buy space you don't need until you need it. thst can work in regards to your dispute also. If I buy an 8tb side but only have 2-3tbs of space to utilize for it, I can still wait until I have 4tb of space which would result in me waiting a bit before buying it. aka when I truly need it, and it will be cheaper. (not factoring in these tariffs) new tech costs so premium and gets cheaper over time. Buy it when you need it, unless you have money to burn.

Meanwhile, back in reality, NAND, RAM, and hard drives have volatile pricing that can ABSOLUTELY lead to large periods of time where prices are extremely elevated.Toshiba's power outage, Taiwan's flooding, and WD having issues with armatures all led to protracted unavailability. Then you have Chia, which was upwards of 2 years where hard drives were 3x pre-Chia. Add in the obvious events related to bad fiscal policy, and you'd be foolish to tell people prices would go down in the face of 25-50%+ pricing increases.

The prices can be volatile but it's all relative. An 8TB NVME released in mid-2024 is generally going to be less expensive one year later, and two years later. He said what is "generally" the case, which obviously doesn't account for those unforeseeable black swan events you mentioned.

So if a person doesn't *need* this capacity today, it may seem compelling to jump on a new low price, but frankly it'll likely be cheaper come Black Friday, which is very close now. I'm sure any day now we'll have those massive tariff increases we've been told are always just around the corner for months lol.

Nah, I got a pair of the 4TB versions on Prime Day 2023 for $160 each. Currently $270.
That's $40/TB compared to this 8TB at $62.50/TB (from Sandisk site).
I was reading reports of a glut and checking the charts. I put one in my desktop and waited a year to put the other in a new laptop.

You can't compare price/TB on a 4TB NVME to an 8TB NVME. There's a reason why there is only a handful of 8TB NVME products even available while there's dozens of 4TB NVME products available on the market. The logistics of fitting 8TB in the same form factor is just too costly at this point. And this 8TB NVME didn't even exist in 2023 if one wanted to make a direct comparison.

Of course you can compare them. The price today for the 8TB drive on Amazon is exactly 2x the cost of the 4TB drive.
There's no magic sauce. 8TB TLC drives have existed for 4 years, come on now. The first ones are what I would call costly at ~$2,000.

you got lucky waiting a year and still paying less. but is this the exact same stick?!? But that's what I'm saying, buying when you need it is smart as you paid that price a year and sat on it.
