if the bolt head is being stripped (rounded I assume you meant) it's because:

over torqued
incorrect wrench used
the person working on car shouldn't

waiting for my car to be finished late one sunday evening at Walmart ... the crew was running around like Crazy... they had Lost the plug to someones oil pan.. NO auto parts places were open... Next day, I bought a Spare plug, put in my glove box.....

Decent non-magnetic plugs with molded rubber seal ring, eliminates the potential of dropping/losing copper crush washers. 13mm drive hex head. Worth keeping a couple of these if they fit your vehicle's oil pan spec for future DIY changes.

That moment when you try to put this in and realize at one of your oil changes, they stripped it and rethreaded it using a bigger plug. It happens a lot.

I would but I don't like the 13mm, I always buy the 16mm. it's harder to strip a 16mm head.

How you would strip it? ~30ft lb at most for oil pan plug and you change it out fairly frequent.

I would add that if you're working with your dad's or granddad's (or really cheap) sockets, that might be the problem. 13mm might not be enough if you're working with old sockets were corner drive where as anything from the last couple decades are flank drive.

Great story! Note to self: don't go to Walmart for tire installation anytime when autoparts stores may close. I brought in $400 in Bluetooth TPMS sensors for our new-to-us winter wheels when buying snow tires.

I like these guys and the counter folks, but they threw the OEM black plastic caps (black rims) in the trash and installed chrome plated caps instead.
Hey, I enjoy the youthful look as much as the next middle aged guy, but galvanic corrosion can fuse the caps to the aluminum valve stems over time or when exposed to salts (AMHIK). They couldn't or wouldn't find the OEM caps, so I bought some OEM style replacement (that probably won't last).

I always bring a breaker bar, torque wrench, and lug socket for the parking lot after a wheel service, and I'm always really glad I did. The one time I forgot cost me a pair of front rotors.

Do my own changes, keep the cars for 10 years so probably do 40+ changes on each car, never ever bought a replacement plug, had any leaks and never stripped or rounded off the flats using correct tools to a reasonable torque.

Fits my Ridgeline, grabbing a couple just in case, although the stock head is 17mm. I change my oil so I'm not worried about stripping a smaller head, but I might still manage to lose the original plug via Murphy's law.

these don't have crush washers. The rubber o-ring is attached to the plug. I buy this type of plug. If it gets to where the rubber sticks to the pan and comes off the bolt I will replace it. Or after lots of use if the rubber gets pretty flat and looks like it isn't doing it's job.
