If no fire ring these work ok, fire ring forget about it in most cases it won't fit. If you really want to cook over a camp fire get either a tripod with a floating grate with chain or one that stakes into the ground and pivots. Both are more universal and easier to control heat.

so, if your fire ring has a larger diameter than the width of this item, it won't fit over the top? is this math or science?
