I thought you got a much better screen, hdmi input, card input and extra thunderbolt. I guess what you a using it for matters and $300 is an absolute bargain for those features. For me, it's a no brainer for the extra $300. Just checked, also twice the SSD storage 256 vs 512, 12MP center stage camera vs 1080p, 13.6 inch screen vs 14.2 on pro, 500 nits vs 1600 nits on pro and 6 hr longer battery on pro. Correct my previous statement, you'd be silly to not pay the extra $300!

I wouldn't buy this. Same core CPU and only 2 more cores compared to the macbook air M4 that is $300 cheaper. If you're gonna get a Macbook Pro, I'd at least shoot for the M4 Pro Chip, or there is a refurbished Macbook Pro M3 Pro at BestBuy for $1100 refurbished. Complete luck on the draw on that one however.

I recently got a MacBook Pro for school. Not many deals going on, I found the M4 Pro chip, 24gb ram, with 1TB on BH Photo for $1899. Did I do good? Apple 14" MacBook Pro (M4 Pro, Space Black) https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/pr...ro_m4.html

You do. I have an Air that I've loved but it's brutal outdoors during the day. I have an M1 Pro and it's so much better outside. I'm going to sell me 15 Air and get a 14 Pro M4 chip. I don't need the M4 Pro power and would prefer cooler machine and longer battery. It sucks that 14" is more clunky, but it weighs the same and has that much nicer screen. Also, I find typing on the 16" nicer than the 15 for some reason. Feels like there's more travel.

If none of these reasons matter to you go for the Air.

curious what you do that this isn't enough for you? I've been scraping by on an old i7 MBP so was looking at this as a potential replacement. I'm a SWE so I just need it for household tasks+any side projects

Regardless of what I do, in this age and era, in 2025, when RAM and SSD are so affordable, Apple is still offering meager RAM and SSD options and still charging a premium price. I run AI/ML model, Linux, VPN, but, then again, it's not about use case, it's about price vs specs.

I'd say the jump is $500 since there have been many $799 base MBA M4 sales. Makes the value decision a lot harder.

also the pro has better cooling. all these features combined make it a better choice for photo and video editing. the air is for basic office tasks and light photo editing. but once you want to do advanced editing, the pro wins, making it worth the extra money.

I am completely new to MacBooks. Is it rare for them to come with more than 16GB?

Then don't buy a mac...no one is forcing you to shop them regardless of your opinion.

not really. They go the whole way up to 128GB. I'm looking at an M3 Max with 64 GB, but of course it comes with a big bump in price.

A very typical ignorant comment as expected.
