It's probably based off of how many air exchanges you want an hour. I have no clue what is "appropriate" for normal HVAC calcs, but labs handling hazardous materials can look for 6-8 turnovers an hour. Our homes/workplaces probably need less than that.

it looks like you get 260 sq ft room 5:1 per hour. if you have a single floor home, condo or apartment you would want to try to place it as centrally as possible to get some purification. It loses efficiency after 260. I'd throw it in your bedroom to help with sleep if you have allergies. Otherwise throw it in the central living space as far away from the wall as you're willing to live with. Throwing it in a corner is less effective. The air purifier rating tests are BS and they place the purifier in the center of a room to measure performance.
