This differs wildly from other camera manufacturer's mounts -- such as Sony's E-mount, Canon's EF and RF-mount, etc. Those are pretty much "if it fits, it sits." (with few exceptions - usually surrounding APS-C vs Full Frame.)
For example, I can put a EF-mount lens made in 1986 for a Canon FILM CAMERA onto the 5DmarkIV DSLR body released in 2016....and it'll work just fine.
Nikon? It'll fit, but it might not work in the slightest. AF motor drive differences. Communication connection differences. Etc. And moving to their mirrorless, some models aren't backwards compatible with an adapter.
Whereas that 1986 Canon EF lens? I can toss on a Canon Mirrorless EF-to-RF adapter and use it on the latest Canon Mirrorless R5markII or R50V. And it'll probably perform better and faster than on any DSLR.
