Beware, as an IT professional, I have tried many of these generic USB DVD drives. The majority of them are old used DVD drives that they salvage, cleanup, put in a case, add a new faceplate, and sell as new. For example, the last one I opened had a dirty beat up drive from 2010 inside. The button was also wonky from the aftermarket faceplate which made the drive pop open at the slightest touch. It's probably fine if you want something really cheap, but just know what you are likely getting. You can typically get new LG USB DVD drives on Amazon or eBay that are actually new for $20-25

I bought mine at Staples and it was cheap. it's been working for over 10 years now. it's in LG. I burnt a lot of disks

There might be another reason to buy name brand DVD writer such as Samsung. It came with Nero software or DVD writing software. Not sure if this is the case anymore.

On the one hand it's a disingenuous ripoff, but part of me likes that we're recycling!

OK I'll bite.
I've needed to rip a DVD twice in the past year when I haven't touched an optical disc in years. The only drive I have is built in to an All In One PC that I don't use so its quite a chore.

You would think if this was really a problem, "IT professionals" would be posting videos, pics, or SOMETHING on the internet showing this problem.

last time I tried to get a Blu-ray Drive for plugging into a computer, I found out that there's a lot of issues at that time with just getting like drivers to play Blu-ray videos on the computer, so just having a drive might be half the battle unless this change since then

Complete fabrication. It would cost them more to do that than to build new.
