A better version of this (990 EVO Plus) was $60 brand new a couple days ago (https://slickdeals.net/f/18605092-samsung-1tb-990-evo-plus-pcie-5-0-x2-m-2-internal-ssd-59-99?p=179075836). Zero reason to buy used at this price.

I will think a 100 times buying refurbished or open box from best buy based on past experience. Bought and external drive 'open box - excellent' last month and luckily it was a store pickup and I was able to check the condition and refuse pickup in store and avoid restocking fee (if any). the drive looked like heavily used with scratches and missing original data cable and entire packaging. was just bubble wrapped with a USB-c insignia branded cable

Yeah, you have to be really careful, there are people that buy new ones, peel off the labels from the new ones, and replace them onto other old or even dead SSDs, then return them to Best Buy. Most Best Buys will never actually plug these in to verify the serial numbers match against what they were actually sold in an actual PC, they will just check the label and box serial numbers vs what they have on the original order receipt info. People were also doing this sort of thing with other devices too.

An my 10tb refurb failed a few months after I put 1000 hours of personal music videos on it an much the 45 years of life i had left on it. At least I didn't have to spend 2 years reinstalling all the software since it wasn't an os drive. But the refurb Dell makes that useless to try to use anyways.

What's really happening in this world is an well known people is an alien species who's been using advanced tech to enslave the planet for 1000s of years. An they hate humans an play with them like the children their father epstein an the pope rapes.
So it's take ten pennies from you an give you 2 back; in all sorts of "magical" (super advanced tech) ways.
sorry to hear that; data recovery and loss is such a pain; guess its better than ransomware but painful nonetheless

If you got an enclosure for this would it be a faster USB storage vs a USB SSD drive?

Yeeeaaahhhh....

Anyway, picked one of these up with the certificate they sent out this week and used a $20 apology gift card they gave me a while back. Cheap storage for a project.

That's probably what happened with me. Got this and Samsung Magician Software flagged it as counterfeit.

I wanted to mention the same thing, also it was 990 evo plus for 60 brand new, so this is not really a deal.

Just received mine. Had less than 200gb written to it. For $40, I'm happy with it.

If you buy one of these - PLEASE download Samsung Magician and verify if it's legit!

I am unlucky I guess - returning ASAP

i was wary of mine too but updated firmware, tested it, 0 hrs power on, 4 power cycles, 1.8TB written, presumably to wipe it. s.m.a.r.t. looked good
going to pop it into the wife's ps5 so she doesn't have to keep uninstalling games lol

It depends. It's best to check out some testing benchmarks online to compare exact models to see which one lines up with your expectations. For example, I did previously try this 990 EVO Plus, but found it had poor sustained write performance for large files. Small files it was ok.

usually these are returned items, not refurbished
"refurbished" doesn't really mean anything in particular. It just means to improve somethings condition. In that regard, even dusting something off and repackaging it can be claimed to have refurbished it.... and many companies often do nothing more than that.

So I ordered this and Best Buy has delayed the shipping multiple days. When I get it. How do I verify that it's the 1TB drive truly?

It mostly depends on the USB being used. It wouldn't be hard for the maximum speed of either USB of the enclosure or USB port to be below that of the SSD / M.2. Since a decent SSD is generally faster than even USB 3.0 (unless it's rather old). So unless you're using like a 10Gbps or faster USB 3.2 (3.1 gen2) port and enclosure, it probably won't make much difference.

start by reading this thread. The Samsung Magician tool has been mentioned and even linked to make it easier to find. As to when you get it... maybe ask BB instead.

Unfortunately it's $70 now and also mentioned checking your accounts as Bestbuy added $10 certificates bringing it down to $40.
Even at an extra 20 bucks, for something that is better in almost every meaningful way, and is NIB, that is going to be with most people for a few years at least, its probably worth it.
If these things were 3 for 100, sure, good deal if you want to do a cheap raid set with them, but at this point and price, little reason to go with a refurb at this capacity.
