I think that's due to the timing, if you set it to a longer subscription period you might get the full discount. But I agree there is something sneaky going on.

The only thing sneaky is that Amazon sometimes changes the S&S delivery option to "Get it sooner". When selecting S&S on the product page, just be sure to click "Change first delivery date" and change to "Get it with your next Subscribe & Save delivery".
