does Chromebook just mean windows not included? can I just throw a linux distro on it?

I have arefurb latitude 5410 11th gen intel that's okay. the thermal management on it is terrible and the cpu throttle down all the time. did they fix it on the 12th gen?

I'm wondering the same thing. Why a Chromebook? I'm not familiar with Chromebook at all. Can this work for a professional needing only stuff like Office and PDF software and maybe a bit of photo editing software?

I'm thinking its because of how locked down you can make a device be on ChromeOS so as to make sure only work was being done on it. This is just my guess I could be and probably am totally wrong.

Chrome is a different OS than Windows and no you can not just load Windows on it however it is rather easy to use Linux on it as it is sort of built in. You need to go to developers mode to use it.

It comes with Google Docs which works well with Windows Office for that sort of work.

It also loads Google Play Apps so you can use them as well.

I use it and not Windows and it works well for me.

If you are going to use Linux you should get the 16 GB one I have heard it works far better with more DDR. Also you can side load Windows with 16 GB but it does not work that well.

This is on the heavier side for a 14 in laptop at 3.34 pounds.

You can install Windows or Linux on this Chromebook using the Mr. Chromebox fw script.

Do note that the keyboard layout does not map 1:1 as the keys are different from a Windows PC. You can manually map the keys, but it is an involved process. The coreboot bios is barebones and the only thing it allows to do is edit boot devices.

You can disable the fw write protect without opening the laptop using a susyq cable.

Can you wipe the chromeOS and throw a different linux distro on it? like is it not locked down from the bios or anything? The listing does show 16gb and has some beefy specs for just running a chromebook. I just googled this myself and it seems to vary from model to model whether or not you can wipe the chromeOS and install another OS on it.

Unlike Windows, Chromebook uses lightweight OS that can run at the minimum hardware. ChromeOS can do all Windows Office, Web, Multimedia apps similar to a PC at very good performance. It is also more safe and secure than PC because it inherits the tablet features.

Yes you can install linux distro's or windows 11 on this model. Either dual boot or completely write over the OS.

To get these chromebooks into debug mode you either need to open it up and disconnect the battery or what I recommend is buying one of these dongles known as a SuzyQ Debug Board for a few bucks on ebay https://www.ebay.com/itm/316024978790. It'll allow you to plug a usb-c to usb-c cable into 2 ports on opposite sides of the chromebook, one into the dongle board and other direct into the usb-c port and that will get you into debug mode without having to open the case. Here is the website with full tutorial and list of supported devices https://docs.mrchromebox.tech/doc...vices.html

Would this be a good machine for a 6th grader to use full time as their school PC?

Looks like they put a few more units up for sale.
This Chromebook variant has a 16:10 screen (1920x1200) but only 45% NTSC gamut, whereas the Windows Touch variant has 100% sRGB gamut but 16:9 screen 1920x1080). Note, there's even a 1366x768 TN variant that nobody should be getting unless you absolutely do not use the screen.

Anyone know if these are Chromebook plus compatible? Seems they meet the CPU, Memory, and display requirements. Not sure about Cam and noise reduction.

Also looks like these are chrome for enterprise. How does that differ for home use? Same OS updates and lifecycle?

Edit: Looks like it is likely Chromebook Plus
