Great! I have been wanting to learn about motorcycle maintenance....

Or the definition of quality, the internal struggles of the main character, the father and son story, or the effects of shock treatment.

It is a great book, but he does go on long ramblings that might lose some. (this is one of my favorites, and I have read it at least 10 times in the last 20 years.)

Book starts out great but boy does it go down a weird rabbit hole on what "quality" means....

I've read this several times and have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, it is an impressive work by someone dealing with serious mental illness. The prose is good and it explores interesting ideas. On the other hand, it actually has little to do with motorcycle maintenance, and even less to do with Zen. Zen was a popular buzzword when it was written, but the philosophy it explores is actually far more Western (Greek, specifically) than Eastern. The author also comes across as a bit of a self-absorbed jerk with little compassion or humility (which are two of the Three Treasures of Daoism and also important in Zen Buddhism, but somewhat antithetical to ancient Greek "virtue").

It's not on that level at all imo.

To any one from a Buddhist country the western interpretation of it is usually exceedingly stupid.

This book SUCKS. Maybe it was a good philosophical work in it's day. It was highly recommended by multiple sources and I even had a friend say it's his favorite and he reads it once a year. You couldn't pay me to read this book again much less spend money on it. I went into it knowing it had little to do with motorcycles and I don't mind a deep thinker so, I did take that into account. If you're not a philosophy lover and you're looking for adventure, skip this.

How anyone could have read this book more than once is beyond me. I'm an avid reader and this book was such a chore to finish. Might be in the top 5 of my personal list of worst books I've ever read.

we could all use a little more of Persig's philosophy in our lives...
