I remember my first rewatch of this as an adult and realizing how dark it was that Phoebe Cates parents were killed before Christmas and it was mentioned rather flippantly, like she's past being orphaned already.

Good memory, I almost forgot the strangeness continued in the second movie. The late 80's seemed like a dark time, not to mention her character worked in a bar in the first movie lol
