There are a lot of great places outside of Hokkaido to visit in winter. The winter in more than half of the country is very mild. We went to the snow festival last year for 1.5 weeks. There are lots of ice and snow carvings to see, but be ready for elbow to elbow viewing the whole time, everyday. It's very packed. I'm sure it will be even worse next year.
I recommend Hakodate, it's definitely underrated with some cool European influence. The seafood there is some of the best in Japan.

For those wanting to buy luggage here, don't. It's stupid expensive and the lowest quality. If you must, bring nested luggage from the US, but remember checked bag fees are expensive these days.
The whole country is very underrated and affordable once you get outside the tourist traps of Tokyo/Osaka/Kyoto. We only go up to Tokyo a few times a year; just way too many people everywhere now and everything has crept up in price. It's curry/ramen/oden weather so definitely eat as much as possible.
Now costs about $50, 7k yen, I bought a 2nd one from Ginza life in Osaka on April trip this year that is basically the same but dual wheels now.
For the price, it's worth it. Doesn't expand is the only downside.
ANA charges about $100 for 2nd checked bag so not ideal if you are planning to check in 2 luggage on your return trip, I found out on my ANA return flight this year.
Every other shop will be more expensive for luggage so go to Ginza Life for lowest price.
I bought my souvenir suitcase for $6.
We are traveling to Japan for the first time in December. Everyone says to pack light and buy what you need there. In fact, a lot of people suggest buying luggage there. I have seen some tips from people to buy a $5-6 Ikea bag there, pack it full of souvenirs and goods and then just have it plastic wrapped at the airport and checked as luggage. Just some food for thought but you could always not check anything in on the way to and then pay for one or two checked luggages for the return trip if you need. We are flying ANA which included one checked bag. I think its awful that they have started taking away checked bags on intl flights ☹️

Not sure if they just wanted to have diff names as there is another location actually in Ginza but not as easy to reach as the one in Asakusa.

Are you sure? I've seen ppl post getting luggage for $40-60 if not less - not super nice ones but decent enough. MCoin's at Shinsaibashi in Osaka for instance

We just got back from a 10 city trip to Japan and did this. It was a hassle finding any suitcases for less than $75. I wish I had brought mine and just packed light and filled with souvenirs. I did see a cool one at Don Q that had roller skate wheels. That's my only regret, that I didn't get that one.
