A couple things I'll add from my experience:
- 8gb is great for most browsing/media consuming. I found the 4gb to get sluggish if I had more than a few tabs open + playing spotify
- I actually found the 13" to feel too big for the tablet mode of this, ie just basic tablet browsing on couch or bed. granted 13" is better for the real "laptop" feel, but I use this as a secondary computer/tablet to just grab for browsing, cooking, watching. 11" is better for that IMO.
- I really like this form factor for letting my young kids do get computer time. they get familiar with the keyboard, can use it like a tablet, and I don't have to panic about them breaking something. I view this as a huge upgrade from something like a fire tablet and a much better value than and iPad (I know that would be debated by many).
Anyways, at $280 for this thing, I think it's a great value
Tempting. Spend a little more for a PC laptop or this ? Thoughts if anybody else had this dilemma
A $279, or even $379 windows laptop is gonna suck. If a Chromebook meets your need, this is a good one. It's on the small side tho… consider it an iPad alternative. IMO, it is much better than an iPad unless you're doing artwork.

These are decent chromebooks/first laptops for younger kids ~7-12 but you will likely run into capabilities that you want that these are not capable of.
I still use one regularly as a media tablet. For those saying this is a real laptop, I would say that it looks like one on paper, but in real world use cases you'll notice a big difference between using this for typing/apps/games/etc and using a windows laptop, or even a more full sized chromebook.
Where this device excels for me is web browsing and streaming video. It's a great Youtube/Hulu/Netflix/Paramount/Fandango device that allows you to use the service in the browser rather than locking you into an app. It will run many Android apps, but the screen size support is hit or miss and can cripple the app, so if you have specific apps in mind, check their support for different screens sizes.

Different people have different needs, but to me this seems both underpowered (4GB RAM is just too low, even for a chromebook) and not a great form factor. Either get a cheap but better laptop for about the same price, or a cheap android tablet

I hate this form factor. Too big and bulky as a tablet and too unstable as a laptop. I can't even use it in my lap you need to rest it on a hard surface. I never use mine for this reason even though the cpu performance is fine and screen looks great

So this is a tablet, not a laptop. It's a Chromebook so unlike other Android tablets that can not run full chrome, this can but this can also run android apps and there is Linux as well.
A Chromebook is considered the most secure main stream OS in the world. Think about that one.
What I find is that this is a little bulky compared to an android tablet, but it is what it is.
The CPU is weak... barely faster then a G99, which is pathetic. I recommend that you never buy a CPU weaker then a G99... and while you are not if you buy this... it is as weak as you would want to go. Based on the specs I would want to pay $100 less and the $400 price tag is a joke.
Benefits of Chrome OS Tablet is the updates from google... there like monthly and they last for years and years... and you get the Android Store. Plus you get access to the complete Chrome addon store.
OK, so I got the HP version for my wife (11" Chrome Tablet) and she has been using it with no complaints for about 3 years. I am a fan of chrome OS tablets AND her tablet is not as fast as this one (about 22% slower).
