A couple things I'll add from my experience:
- 8gb is great for most browsing/media consuming. I found the 4gb to get sluggish if I had more than a few tabs open + playing spotify
- I actually found the 13" to feel too big for the tablet mode of this, ie just basic tablet browsing on couch or bed. granted 13" is better for the real "laptop" feel, but I use this as a secondary computer/tablet to just grab for browsing, cooking, watching. 11" is better for that IMO.
- I really like this form factor for letting my young kids do get computer time. they get familiar with the keyboard, can use it like a tablet, and I don't have to panic about them breaking something. I view this as a huge upgrade from something like a fire tablet and a much better value than and iPad (I know that would be debated by many).
Anyways, at $280 for this thing, I think it's a great value
Tempting. Spend a little more for a PC laptop or this ? Thoughts if anybody else had this dilemma
A $279, or even $379 windows laptop is gonna suck. If a Chromebook meets your need, this is a good one. It's on the small side tho… consider it an iPad alternative. IMO, it is much better than an iPad unless you're doing artwork.

These are decent chromebooks/first laptops for younger kids ~7-12 but you will likely run into capabilities that you want that these are not capable of.
I still use one regularly as a media tablet. For those saying this is a real laptop, I would say that it looks like one on paper, but in real world use cases you'll notice a big difference between using this for typing/apps/games/etc and using a windows laptop, or even a more full sized chromebook.
Where this device excels for me is web browsing and streaming video. It's a great Youtube/Hulu/Netflix/Paramount/Fandango device that allows you to use the service in the browser rather than locking you into an app. It will run many Android apps, but the screen size support is hit or miss and can cripple the app, so if you have specific apps in mind, check their support for different screens sizes.
