Just lousy storage on these fire sticks, and they don't work if you lose Internet. They won't access a Plex server locally if they can't run it through Amazon's spy crap.

Regarding offline use during an internet outage, you are incorrect.

Although inconvenient, if your internet is out, and you firetv UI is blank, you can still go to settings (it's shown on the main screen) then to applications and choose plex and launch it. If plex is configured for local use, you will have no trouble accessing your libraries.

I just unplugged my cable modem to try it.

Although it wouldn't be intuitive for grandma, anyone who has a plex server is savvy enough to access it this way during an outage.

Hope that helps.

The storage appears to still be 8GB on these unfortunately. After upgrading to the 4K Max (2nd gen), I've become spoiled on 16GB so it's hard to go back. Pass for me.

I've read that FireOS 8 uses a lot more storage than the 1st Gen 4k stick and causes less space to be available. Definitely not an upgrade with that in mind...

It's way more space than what the 4K non-Max variant has to offer which is at least 10GB when taking into account the OS and its native apps/bloatware. Speaking of FireOS, not sure if you're aware, but Amazon plans to "ditch" the current Android fork for something else entirely non-Android, more than likely a custom Linux flavor similar to how Samsung offers Tizen OS for their TVs.

I actually just read about that today! May be better going to Linux, we'll have to see. I'm my reference, I was referring to the 2nd Gen 4k having less space to work with due to FireOS 8. I have the 1st Gen myself and my understanding is I won't be able to have as many apps on the 2nd Gen as I do now. when I upgrade, it'll definitely be to the 4K Max.

You do understand that the premise of my comment was pertaining to all 4K non-Max firesticks in general? Lol... Aside from that, it's highly probable that Amazon's next iteration of FireOS will be Linux-based since there are no licensing fees or royalty payments to be made to a rights holder. Like most people, I would still prefer that FireOS retain an Android-based ecosystem since I'm resistant to change and it offers me the freedom to sideload content-rich .apks I prefer to use, giving me options that are unavailable in Amazon's app store. However, I'm a realist and understand Amazon's approach and their purpose for swapping out the OS is in an effort to have more tightened controls over the OS while stifling piracy. It's not hard to tell that it'll eventually turn out as sterile as Roku's OS while still being plastered w/ ads everywhere which defeats the purpose for why I started using the firestick in place of the Roku.
