I have this and it doesn't leak. I neither remove the battery nor the oil and it's fine.

The self oiling feature is not that big a deal, they usually end up leaking and make a bigger mess. With these saws being so small, how much cutting could you really do? The other one gives you a small squeeze bottle for oiling and a brush. I just manually lubricate the chain. Easy. And it has the second battery which, in my opinion, makes it the better deal.

Is this a better option than using reciprocating saw with pruning blade? You can get a bunch of blades for around $7 and they work great in my experience.
That's my question as well. I kind of want one of these little things, but it seems like a recipricating saw will do anything this does and much more -- with less maintenance and far easier blade upkeep/replacement.

But... it wouldn't be as fun as a little pocket toy chainsaw.

This comment made me hit the buy button - I thought all chainsaws eventually leak oil.

The reciprocating saw will certainly last longer. If you are cutting small branches, this is better. Also more flexible in tight areas. But if you want butter smooth and easier cutting, the chain saw will be way better. How long it will continue to work, that's anyone guess on this. So there are pros and cons for both.

I got this a few weeks ago and it works great. If you ever need to cut 1 to 4 inch branches or saplings more than once a year, just buy it.

I usually use a manual saw and that snipper tool thingy to cut back branches and saplings. I used this little saw last week and I realized I should have bought one sooner.

I have this saw. It's a great little pruning saw but it DOES NOT HAVE an auto oiling system like in real chainsaws where there's a little gear pump. This thing has a primer bulb that you have to manually push to oil the bar. There is no pump other than your thumb. I took it apart to verify.

On the plus side, since it doesn't have an auto oiler it doesn't leak oil.

I think the battery is a makita clone. I don't have a genuine makita battery to measure it against but it looks a lot like one.

they do. i've owned probably 25 or more chainsaws. battery, gas, corded...if they have oil reservoirs, they will eventually leak.

These are okay if you don't mind changing the chain every 30 minutes, because that's about how long it takes before the kerf becomes so narrow that the bar starts jamming. I have three, all different, all with the same problem.
