No, this isn't the same thing as vaseline and does NOT only work as preventative. It can be used as preventative, but unlike vaseline the zinc oxide in this cream is an effective agent against diaper rash when it occurs.

Pro tip: this diaper rash cream works, all diaper rash ointments work, vaseline works... these all work as a preventative. Use it every day as a preventative. The trick is don't let diaper rash start in the first place. The ointment/cream goes on the skin to act as a barrier.

Indeed zinc oxide is very good to calm down the skin. It's frequently used in wound care clinics too.

this is horrible for a baby's skin BTW. A great alternative is extra virgin coconut oil, Honest sensitive diaper rash cream, or Esembly cloth diaper friendly diaper rash cream
Explain why it's horrible please

I used to use this but the smell got unbearable. We now use Boudreaux Butt Paste and it's amazing. Very similar product but no nasty smell and cured all rashes usually within a day or two.

Someone hasn't had a kid with bad diaper rash.

No way EVCO is the same.

This stuff works amazingly on Psoriasis as well. Way better than normal diaper cream or skin lotions.

If you have a kid and need diapers and such, if you spend $100, you'll get back $25.

This is a much better product: Weleda Baby [amazon.com]. Good barrier but not as thick as Desitin or etc.

FWIW might be TMI but works well for general diaper-area irritation in adults as well. "Monkey Butt"

Not Medical Advice: And for reducing HS flares. A few people I know use Desitin too and mix it wth a little Neosporin/Vasoline, then a small amount of lidocane equal parts and dab it on sites that are painful. Obviously, don't use on open sores and such but be wise & ask your doctor first.

Not a doctor, just a parent of kids who get diaper rashes. Desitin is an amazing preventative, if I used it every change all rashes would probably be eliminated. But it's kind of a PITA to apply without making a mess, and then to get off your hands afterwards, so I usually get lazy. A.D. is great once the rash is in effect.
That said, although the big tub costs less than the squeeze tubes, it's basically impossible to keep the tub clean of hair/dirt/etc. So for sanitary reasons I use the squeeze tubes; they cost more, but last a long time and are always clean.
