They stayed on the same process node but upped the core clocks, which requires more wattage. The performance increases are about 1:1 with regard to wattage, but you do get a bit more performance with the move to GDDR7 as well.

There's an AMD GPU in every PlayStation, SteamDeck, Xbox, and most handheld PCs on the planet. They're doing okay. They also make significantly more profit on their CPU division. AMD just doesn't care about consumer GPUs anymore. 3 SKUs for this generation? What a joke.

The thing I don't understand is how is the 4000 series is so much more energy efficient compared to the 5000 series? The RTX 4060 has a TDP of 115 watts. The RTX 5060 has a TDP of 145W. The 5060 Ti is 180W. Even the lowest end GPU, the RTX 5050 is 130W of power. All that extra electricity being sucked from the outlet = more heat generation inside of the case which means more heat being expelled in your room. NVIDIA took one step forward and 2 steps back in that regard.

Getting closer to reasonable prices! Would like to see this come down to around 350 all said and done though. It's not unreasonable to expect last gen 70-class performance from a 60Ti but here we are...

The 5060 Ti is 180W. Even the lowest end GPU, the RTX 5050 is 130W of power. All that extra electricity being sucked from the outlet = more heat generation inside of the case which means more heat being expelled in your room. NVIDIA took one step forward and 2 steps back in that regard.

4000 series had a good focus on efficiency and delievered in that regard. It was marketed badly and was not priced reasonably--but the 50 series is just worse.

That's also why there was not much of an increase in performance over the 3000 series. Personally I didn't mind that as I wanted something that ran cool and efficient

Any guesses if we'll see deals on the RTX 4000 cards later this year? Been keeping an eye out for a deal on a 4060 Ti 16GB.


Update: My two tech-bro confidants messaged me separately and basically said not to think and just buy it.

5 gaming SKUs (9070/XT, 9060XT 8/16GB, 9060 announced), with a few more pro skus. It's not as dire as it seems, 9060XT is a significantly better deal than 5060, which is probably why nVidia is dropping the price of 5060Ti, to reposition it as the competitor to 9060XT.

I gave up on AMD ever making a stable windows driver, maybe they got frustrated too

Bingo. They spent the time between 40x and 50x improving the ai workflows (better, lower latency frame generation) so you wont really get more CUDA horsepower for the same watts in, but you will get better looking games for the same watts in. They also started to right the wrongs when it comes to ram allocation, giving a card like this 16GB should have been the norm in 40x but alas.

I got a 2600x and 2060s. What cpu and gpu should I be upgrading to this winter? I've been out of research for a while

I don't see that at all. There's still 8GB SKUs and there's a premium for the 16GB variant. Also, the X070 series starts with 12GB VRAM, which is ridiculous. Going further back, the 3080 started with 10GB and they did this to not cannibalize their workstation card sales. In my opinion, this AI craze is the sole reason nVidia hasn't been putting more VRAM on their cards for the past 5 years at least.

Can you wait for the Super editions delayed till the first half of 2026? Those will have more VRAM and lower starting prices. Part of the reason prices are falling now.

One main thing is what resolution you are gaming at?
Do you do video editing/encoding?
Do you do local AI processing?
