I haven't used the D7 myself but you should expect this pot to be better than other All-Clad pots at heat retention -- just not quite as good as a cast iron dutch oven (the lid, of course, is not going to be as good at heat retention as a dutch oven, but it will fit tightly and it's very oven safe to high temps). If you are on a budget and want one single pot to perform a bunch of functions from braising to deep frying to stovetop-to-oven dishes, to boiling water for pasta, this would be a fine choice for the price. I definitely don't need one but it's tempting!
