This is indeed an all-time low price for a heavy, high-quality, versatile, large stainless-clad pot. It's certainly a better choice than the chinese-made All-Clad "dutch ovens" with the glass lids that All-Clad sells for a similar price.
I haven't used the D7 myself but you should expect this pot to be better than other All-Clad pots at heat retention -- just not quite as good as a cast iron dutch oven (the lid, of course, is not going to be as good at heat retention as a dutch oven, but it will fit tightly and it's very oven safe to high temps). If you are on a budget and want one single pot to perform a bunch of functions from braising to deep frying to stovetop-to-oven dishes, to boiling water for pasta, this would be a fine choice for the price. I definitely don't need one but it's tempting!

This was an absolutely killer deal. If I didn't recently buy All-Clad's D5 dutch Oven, I would be in for one. I had nowhere to put the thing.
