I always buy CPU, motherboard and RAM in that order. Makes it easier starting at a certain target CPU that you want, then you can search and sort motherboards by CPU socket. Once you got your motherboard and CPU, then you can look at compatible RAM for your motherboard. Just something to think about the next time around.
