I know roomba gets a lot of flak here. but I bought a j7 2 years ago and it's been rock solid and way better than my roborock at not running over cables and shoes and socks and whatnot. lidar kinda sucks for obstacle avoidance.

I own a very old Roomba I got from a thrift store for $15 and will say the the core vacuuming function of getting dust and dander out of carpet works excellent for my old blind and dumb Roomba.I have been robo-vac shopping lately and it seems to be a common theme reading reviews on the internet that Roombas are very good at actually vacuuming, which seems to be something of a weakness for a lot of other brand robotic vacuums.While I agree that if they have software and hardware flaws they deserve whatever criticism they get, at the price point of this post people looking to try out automated vacuuming could do worse than a Roomba vacuum.

Any robot vacuum without lidar is a hard pass, unless you just want a sub $50 machine to bounce around randomly to clean.

Where can I find a sub $50 machine that uses randomization to clean and is presumably not connected to the internet? I'd happily take that over a robot vacuum that captures images, video, lidar scans and is internet connected.

I always thought this was a weird push. As a person with several pets I would rather my roomba run bouncing over areas 5 or 6 times then charging instead of running over them once and thinking it was efficient and quitting. I have a husky and 2 American Eskimos i can't run a regular sweeper over the carpet once and it get everything so the thought that a little portable device will is just odd to me. We currently have 4 roombas and have had everything from bottom of the line to top and the dumb ones tend to end up full more often than the higher end ones.

Yes. j7 adds obstacle avoidance and remembers the map so you can command it to clean specific rooms or areas.
Plus version adds the dock that empties the robot.
