I bought a R36H recently, pretty amazing device for the money and shows up ready to play. There are obviously better retro handhelds but they cost more and not everyone may need integrated wifi or the ability to play PS2 games. That isn't a $25 conversation

Also had an RG34XX SP, that one had analogs and a 3:2 screen (vs the RG35XX SP) but otherwise the same device. That was great too.

I like the SP but I grew up with an SP and generally like clamshells. I'd probably recommend that or the XX H because that line has a lot of support with feature rich custom OS's and the ability to run some lightweight PC games via Portmaster. For example, I've played a bunch of Celeste on my Anbernic SP.

Edit: for anyone who gets an Anbernic XX handheld, here's a video on setting up the latest version of MuOS, which I would highly recommend installing. https://youtu.be/Z9JGfdkV6CU

Can't go wrong with either. The Ambernic has WiFi, vibration motors, and HDMI output. The R36H doesn't, but you can add Wi-Fi via the USB C OTG port.I prefer the R36H, personally, but they both are great.

While this is a good device, it's kind of getting old and buttons are hard to press

If the R36H is anything like the R36S, the thing is trash. I'm on the retro handhelds discord, and a couple times a day we have people asking for help because they bought an R36 device and it has a problem with the software, the battery, charging, and other stuff beyond the typical bad microSD cards that fail quick.

I think, if you're ok with a vertical Gameboy shape and want the best starter handheld value for the lowest price (that isn't faulty and prone to breaking fast), you would be better off with the battleXP G350:

However, I personally value what the Anbernic RG35xx SP offers enough to want to buy that instead. I like that it is a clamshell: fold the screen to auto save and sleep the device, open it to have the game resume right where you left off, and no need for screen protectors or cases. I like that it doesn't bother with joysticks, because it helps you to focus just on the systems the processor is best at. I also think HDMI and Bluetooth are nice, because you can connect it to a tv (at home, friend's house, hotel) and wireless controllers to make it be like a NES/SNES/Genesis/PS1 Classic mini console (also GBA) and maybe play a little multiplayer.

All the handhelds here aren't really powerful enough for N64 or Saturn… you can play some Dreamcast, and some lightweight N64, but not Goldeneye. But you can play any PS1 game and older, which all play great without joysticks (except Ape Escape), and basically there's years worth of fast-paced and stylish games to play. Try playing Megaman X, Super Metroid, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Super Mario World 3, Lightning Force, Street Fighter 2, Chrono Trigger, etc! They're quick to turn on and play, and just as quick to put down.
