How can this be a bad deal for $20?

I don't have this specific set, but had somewhat similar in the past. After some time knife handles became loose and started self-detaching from their blades. It turned out that the blades were only 1" in the handles. Yeah, I guess, they saved a few cents on the steel.
Long story short, when you buy knives, make sure their blades protrude (and visible) all the way to the back of the handle. If their handles are fully wrapped around the blades, they likely aren't any good. The only exception I have is Victorinox chef knife, the rest follow the suit.

My knife set (20 years old or so) is the junk you are describing. Handles are loose, many broke when trying to push too hard because the metal is thin / only goes in an inch.
So, I guess that's why I was thinking $20 wasn't bad. It can replace the "junk" I have, with something that will last another 20 or so years.
I don't use them for much. Cutting bread, etc. I do have ONE really nice knife that I use all the time (not part of the original junk set).
THANKS for the input, I could afford a nicer set. I'm not broke like I was 20 years ago.
