I'm not a big fan of thermal french presses. They make it way too easy to over-brew your grounds, leading to bitter coffee. I often brew with a normal glass carafe, and I can just let the second half be without this problem. In the late morning or afternoon I can just microwave the coffee to enjoy the second cup.

I have this and it's pretty good. If you fill to about 1" below the spout start is all you can do or else grounds mix in when pressing down. So although it's 51oz, you really only get about 45oz of true fillability (if that's a word, lol).

I always wrap my press with a kitchen towel while it's steeping, to conserve some of the heat.
Alternately, there are actual French Press/Cafetiere jackets (like a teapot cozy) one can buy. Some are just a cloth; some are fancy insulated ones.

I have this and it makes French press much less hazardous than the glass carafe. it's easy to clean, too.

I'm not a fan of French press coffee, so I actually now use my press to make small batches of cold brew. The filter usually works well enough to keep the grounds down when I pour out the cold brew. (Mostly, however, I use a larger brewing jar for cold brew, but that's less convenient when I only need a few days' worth.)

got an open box off of ebay years ago for $30. comes in very handy on camping trips. never breaks, just a few dents, lol. basically a tank. at home, it gets put back in the pantry. Mochamaster is king in the kitchen.
