People like to hate on these fire tablets but they're honestly not bad IF you get one with 4 GB of RAM. I believe this effectively replaces the fire HD 10+, which had 4 GB of memory vs. the 3 GB of the standard model. I've had one of those for a couple years now and still works great, whereas the older fire tablets I had inevitably bogged down and became unusable. Granted, I wouldn't use one of these for more than watching videos, browsing, reading, etc., they work great for the purpose. I sideloaded Google apps and disabled lock screen ads, I've been satisfied.

No, unfortunately. Amazon is going to be moving to an OS developed in-house based on Linux they are calling Nova OS. They've finally grown tired of the rooting and the sideloading. They are moving to something completely propriety and locked down that they can fully control.
Not sure of your source of information. Fire Stick / TV devices are moving to Vega OS. Amazon tablets will move to stock android.

Amazon has never updated there devices to next OS level. Its always been patches, but the base OS is never updated.

These are all speculation, have existed for two years now. Nothing is officially out.

Oh, you're right. I've been researching a new streaming box and got things mixed up in my head. Apologies for that...

I've been happy with the plus models and my wireless charger stands. Fire HD 10, plus wireless charging, 4 GB RAM,- 12-hour battery and wireless charging. 64GB internal storage. Add up to 1 TB with microSD

WOOT deals for $74ish last year.. I get a lot of use out of Prime Video Live News with local stations. And speakers are decent.

Painfully slow when navigating. Once the video starts playing, it's mostly ok.

Amazon is holding a hardware event tomorrow. Wonder if they'll be announcing any new Fire tablets.
Not wondering at all about it. The only hardware that is good from Amazon is the kindle

Not worth it even at this price. It's slow and have to do the amazon fire workarounds. Just one of those cons is a big drawback, can't take both.

FYI, select Amazon Prime members (with really old Amazon tablets) are eligible for even lower price of $112. As I bolded below, you don't need to recycle the old tablet with Amazon.
So pay attention and click the "Apply" button if you see it.

Fire Tablet Upgrade Promotion Terms and Conditions
  • This is a limited time promotion for select customers who have one of the following devices registered to their Amazon account: Fire HD 6 tablet (2014 release), Fire HD 7 tablet (2014 release), Fire 7 tablet (2015, 2017, 2019 releases), Fire HD 8 tablet (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020 releases), Fire HDX 8.9 (2014 release), Fire HD 10 (2015, 2017, 2019, 2021 releases).
  • Amazon reserves the right to modify or cancel this offer at any time. This offer is valid for qualifying recycle and upgrade submissions made from 9:00 AM (Pacific Time) 9/28/2025 through 11:59 AM (Pacific Time) 10/9/2025. After claiming the offer, you can place a new Qualifying Device (as defined below) in your cart and promotional price displayed will be automatically applied at checkout. The promotional price will expire at 11:59 PM (Pacific Time) on 10/9/2025. Recycling your old device is optional and not required to take advantage of this offer.
  • The promotional price towards a new Qualifying Device is limited to one per customer and account during this promotion and may not be combined with other offers. The promotional price towards a new Qualifying Device may be combined with an Amazon.com Gift Card value. Shipping charges and taxes may apply to discounted items.
  • The promotional credit can be used only toward the purchase of one of the following devices (each, a ?Qualifying Device?) that is shipped and sold by Amazon.com Services LLC and does not apply to other digital products, pre-owned devices, or products sold by sellers other than Amazon.com Services LLC. Offer good while supplies last. Qualifying Devices: Fire Max 11 tablet (newest model), Fire HD 10 tablet (newest model), Fire HD 10 Kids tablet (newest model), Fire HD 8 tablet, Fire HD 8 Plus tablet, Fire HD 8 Kids tablet, Fire HD 8 Kids Pro tablet.
  • Shipping charges may apply. If you redeem this offer towards a new Qualifying Device and return the device, your refund will equal the amount you paid for the device, subject to applicable refund policies.

FYI, it looks like an exploit was released yesterday for Fire Tablets running Fire OS 7 and 8 (which includes this tablet) allowing certain restrictions on Fire OS to be removed. Examples include disabling updates, replacing the default launcher, de-bloating, removing ads, etc. It'll still be running Fire OS, but these hacks do make this tablet feel more like Android and much more usable.
Not implying this 2.5 year old tablet is worth the price even with this exploit, but it may be worth checking out if you already own one.

I never have had much luck with Amazon tablets. They start slowing down after 6~8 months and need to be reset to factory setting.
