this is...$99. the cheapest dual hose one is going to be thrice the price. I've had this exact A/C in peak Texas heat and it worked great for my 20x18 room.

What? These literally cool down a (small) room and pump the heat generated outside.

There's still warm areas and people have different budgets. There are no dual hose options anywhere even close to $100 even in the dead of winter. I had no issue cooling a decent large sized bedroom with this in triple digits outside heat in Texas. people who are looking at this deal are looking for this:1. Is my room hot2. will this cool it to comfortable temps 3. see #1

Bad choice all around. Money will come back in the form of electricity bill savings, with any luck the dual hose AC unit will pay itself within a few months of use.
no it's not. it will not for most people since most dual hose for one have much higher BTU ratings, and I don't know what electricity provider you have but no portable AC is going to pay itself off in a couple of months

Can you just buy this as a dehumidifier? Or not good and or used too much electricity?

It is my understanding that these things should be advertised as a dehumidifier only. They are not going to bring the temperature of the room down and will actually add some heat. Buying this thinking it's going to cool you down in the middle of summer could actually be dangerous, IMHO.

Not sure where you got that info, they are far less efficient than a window unit or mini split but they will cool a room down. The inefficiency lies in the fact that they pull the air from the room to cool it and push hot air outside creating a negative pressure in the room so it will suck some hot air from outside as well as the vent hose is usually just plastic so not insulated so some of the hot air being vented conducts back into the room though the hose we are talking a few percent so overall they still work but wont get the 97% efficiency like a mini split would! I have one of these sitting with my generator I can break out in case of a August power failure so I can keep one room in the house cool until power gets restored!

This one has only one duct... avoid and go for dual always.

Single duct uses air from the same room to cool itself and pushes that air out of the room.

Dual duct pulls fresh air on one side to keep thr components cool and pushes the hot air out of the other hose keeping your room cooler and saving money on electricity.
Why does someone always poo on the bottom of the barrel cheapest option, you know the option someone that can't afford better would get then suggest something double or triple the price? Here I'll do the same to your recommendation! Don't buy a dual hose buy a mini split instead they are only a few dollars more and are much more efficient and can heat and cool! Wait don't buy just any mini split buy an inverter mini split for even more efficiency, they are only a few dollars more than the regular mini split!

I have a Mitsubishi mini split in one area of my basement. I was told by my HVAC guy that it will only dehumidify when the AC is running. Is this the case with the Black and Decker? I need additional dehumidifiers in 2 rooms of my basement and a model that works independently from the AC would be a bonus.
Buy a dehumidifier if you need a dehumidifier! A properly sized air conditioner will also dehumidify when it is cooling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_QfX0SYCE8

Of course a $100 air conn will be far less efficient than a mini split. It doesn't mean it makes a room hot.

Would this do well for a tent when camping in mid summer? 6 person tent with 3 kids and a dog in it.

Mine took three months to pay itself. It can be done. And the difference in performance is night and day.

The point right now is that warm weather is basically over, and there is enough time to wait and save for a dual hose that will be efficient next year when hot weather returns.

If it were June or July I would concede, yeah, get a cheapo one to tide you over. Now there is no need for the cheap emergency option.

Depends on how much you use your AC unit. You need to stop assuming your AC needs and related budgeting are the same as other people. What if someone only needs to use it occasionally, because of climate variances or a lightly used room? You need to use an appliance a TON to see savings from increased efficiency, when the cost difference is as big as this. Try to imagine that other people are different from you, before you post comments like this.

Yeah. I would say that if you don't need the AC much, say, up to a week or two a year, it would not make much of a difference. Such a person may even skip buying one altogether. Chances are these people are few.

But even so, waiting for a better model is a good idea.

For those that need it to run about eight hours a night (which is pretty much the entire human race unless for some reason they don't require sleep), the savings from waiting to buy a more expensive, but energy efficient one, are worth it.

Having used single duct unit in a home office setting for a few years. It works (even in sweaty 90+ weather) but just not as efficiently as the dual duct unit. Also the heat going out through the exhaust is ridiculous hot and should be ready for it.
