Thanks OP. I was gonna ship and then it offered a 10 off 20 coupon to use pickup, which works fine for me too. Worth checking if you live close to a Lowes.

That was the first thing that I thought of when I saw this pop up. I got the HD email the other day announcing it and thought it was strange after all these years of being able to purchase it anywhere.

Yeah I do, maybe a gold status has something to do with the offer.

Is HD going to be the only place to get any Kilz? The only thing I heard was a little ambiguous, and made it sound like maybe HD will be the only place with their full line, which left open the possibility that limited products may still be sold elsewhere. No clue really, speculating sort of.

I was just wondering if Kilz 3 is the best choice for priming cheap, old, hardboard wood paneling. I tried a couple different varieties of Kilz (including an alkyd version) on some of that junk at my old house and got bleed through regardless. The paneling in my basement here is in better shape but I'm nervous about painting it and don't want to bother if it's going to look crumby.

Noob question, when would I think of using kilz vs a normal primer?

Like only for older house with uneven surfaces and funky black paint? Outdoor wood, metal, etc?

Kilz is particularly good for stains that won't go away, for example water stains; e.g. there was a minor leak at one point that was repaired but regardless of how much you repaint the spot the stain keeps coming through. That's a good spot for Kilz. Also for mold areas, although personally I'd kill/clean the mold/area before priming. I believe it's also good for covering nicotine stains though I don't have personal experience with that.

Those things, or anything that might be problematic for a more basic primer, like stains that can bleed through, colors that are hard to change if you're going lighter, where there might be adhesion problems, etc. Regular primers are good for clean surfaces in good condition, like new drywall or previously painted walls and trim.

Kilz is just a brand name. You'd use it anywhere you'd normally use any other brand's primer.
