Damn based on these comments I guess I'm keeping my Midea. I was considering returning it to Costco and netting a couple hundred bucks but mine has been completely mold/standing water free and seems to work really well. The one thing I like about this model more though is that it's easier to remove. The Midea sits above the sill and is screwed into the window frame for support. Our winters in CA are mild and nothing seemed to go wrong with it this last one so thankfully I don't have to remove it.

I have 3 Midea U units, 3 of the new Hisense J units and one of these GE units. The Midea units (mold and all) blow these out of the water. It works well enough to cool enough of our first floor, but it gets clogged pretty easily. The worst of it ended up pouring water out of the front corners. I've had to fix this thing three times this summer. This might be the last summer for it.

We got both an inverter 10300 BTU and an inverter 12200 BTU this summer. The 10300 had wifi issues, but otherwise both have worked great. Fast to cool, very quiet, and pretty good looking for a window AC.

Be warned of the maintenance requirements for these. I've used 3 of the 10K BTU's and 1 of the 12K BTU units for the past 2 summers. Issues the second summer:

1. The 12K displayed the "P1" code and stopped running.

- Was able to keep it running during a very hot stretch of weather by connecting the inside drain plug to a tube and directing it into a 5 gallon bucket. Very much a temporary/emergency setup.

- It was out of warranty (1 year) so bought a replacement. Took the old unit apart and found the outside coil clogged with debris. Note on page 8 of the owners manual states needing to the have the outside coils "professionally cleaned" if they are clogged. The issue with this design is the fan picks up water from the outside tray and blows it into the coils. If the water is contaminated with dirt, etc. it will clog the coils.

- After cleaning the coils, the unit runs fine and serves as an emergency back-up.

2. One of the 10K units is now dripping water with no error codes. Temporary/emergency setup is to put a 5 gallon bucket underneath to catch the drips. I'll be taking it out and disassembling it next week to find root cause.

Observations after 2 summers:

- All the air filters must be cleaned by vacuuming first and and then soapy water. Don't take short cuts.

- The plug water filter can easily clog and when clogged water will not be pumped to the outside. I purchased spares to have on hand when cleaning the filters. The dirty plug needs to be soaked in soupy water over night. I use a cotton swab inside and out of the filter screen to pickup any left over debris.

- Birds will build a nest in the void space on the outside area where the unit exits the window. Not good since birds are noisy and more importantly the nest material will be sucked into the outside coil. Adding a metal mesh screen to block off the area solves this issue.

Suggest cleaning the outside coils once a year. Not the easiest job, but can be done by taking the outside cover off and removing the fan assembly which allows full access to the coil.

Other than that, I may try one more summer with these but hoping to found an alternative with less maintenance.

I have owned 2 GE air conditioners that completely died in under 2 years each. On one the control board completely died and the unit became a brick. On the other something went wrong with the control board where the fan would turn on but nothing else (no AC, no wifi).

I will never buy another GE air conditioner no matter the price and I highly suggest everyone to stay away from them.

I have two of these. Both have failed pumps that transfer water from front to the back. It'll error out if the drain plug isn't open and dripping freely below. Not impressed
this same thing happened to mine. I called GE to process a warranty claim, they told me that they didn't have any warranty units, asked that I email my proof of purchase, they mailed me a check for the full amount I had paid in store the year prior. I am not sure what happened but the following summer, it was working fine again after sitting all winter unused.

Great price, but these U-shape under the window ACs are a design failure. Basically guaranteed mold on any unit like this. The U-shape above the window sill is a much better design.
what makes the under the window one fundamentally worse?

I literally had GE here today for 2+ hours to repair this exact unit with the pump issue others have mentioned. Fortunately under warranty. Service is clueless how to handle these. The only reason i'm sticking with them is because they're the only thing that will fit in my gnarly windows.

Note they are HEAVY. Definitely need 2 people to install and you will curse.

At this price maybe worth it for a few seasons but otherwise would not recommend.

Had to return mine. The idea of the clear view is great but the actual mount implementation is definitely not.

they rely on a separate pump to move the condensed water back outside, rather than just letting gravity drain things back outside.
Unless you have the condensate drain inside the house instead, which it might do anyway and unexpectedly if the pump fails.

GE appliances was sold to chinese company several years ago and the quality/support for their products completely plummeted. Steer clear.
