It's ridiculous that they even still sell these with paltry 256gb SSDs in 2025. 512gb really should be the starting point/bare minimum by now.

I'd be buying this for a Christmas gift; anyone have insight whether this is a good price to pull the trigger or if there's likely to be a better deal that's relatively easy to snag at some point before Christmas?

The crazy thing is how much more they went for the upgrade. $200 extra when a 512 gb ssd on its own is like $40-$50. Such a rip off...

Even still, the real cost for the end user to go from a 256gb SSD to a 512gb these days is like $10 extra. For a bulk buyer with serious muscle to throw around like Apple, I'm sure it's much less than that. Instead they're trying to charge you $200 extra to get that upgrade. It's just gross.

For Apple yes. You may find some 24 machines at decent prices during Christmas. Anything higher than that will have a punitive cost typically. Once you go past 24 you really need to go to the MacBook Pro. Apple M series with 8MB works fine as well. That was the older models. It cost Apple nearly nothing to go to 16. I assume the future of using AI in the OS makes 16 more logical. The 256 hard drives are ridiculous. They should move the default to 512. We will see if any changes come this fall.
