So, hey! Somethng you really shouldn't have to deal with, but really should! SD needs a policy on public health misinformation!

I can't believe I have to make this post, but I'm tired, boss.

As we get into flu/covid/rsv season, more and more threads are turning political.
Posters trying to tell others about deals on vaccinations, masks, insurance etc. get overrun by political opinion rather than fact. Kind of what used to happen with guns.
You solved that, can you make a policy to solve this?

A deals site should NOT be a place to debate public health, fact vs. opinion and become a conduit of misinformation.

The most recent thread about a credit to Sam's club for a flu shot was a shitshow.

I reported misinformation and general insults and stupidity, and was told by a mod it could stand, (which I thought was odd.)
The Mod advised "Please feel free to share your opinion in the thread or mark as unhelpful, if you wish. Thanks"
So, I did. Respectfully. Now the entire thread is gone.
What a complete and utter waste of everyone's time: Me, the mods, even the antivaxxers!

1. Science is not opinion.
2. Please stop letting SD become yet another conduit of public health misinformation.
3. PLEASE see #2. Again and again.

My fave post in the thread was a user stating "I remember when healthcare was not political". Speak it, internet stranger!

I come to SD to find great deals on things I absolutely do not need, coupons that are highly sus and contests that I never win. I don't come looking for is medical falsehood, political BS or shoddy modding leading to the dangerous practice of spreading public health misinformation. Period.

Maybe begin to have a conversation about this, please, asked respectfully by a longtime member who is just sick of this shit.

Have a nice day.

Unfortunately, the conservatives have won with the brutal loss of Kamala, so their misinformation is no longer subject to removal online. In the current Trump era, SD would receive a lot of blow back (boycotting) if they started targeting it.

Science and Public Health should not be political, though. I know it is for some. But SD solved the gun posting issue and I am confident they can solve this. That was even more fraught.
Right now, all these threads do is bring out the worst in people and cause tons of mod headaches. They also contain useful information about deals on things we want or need.
I have faith in SD. I have been here a LONG time and know there is a way to get through this.

Thank you for taking the time to share this with us.

Political posts are already against the rules. As you have noticed, things that weren't political just a few years ago can now be considered political. The mods walk a fine line of trying to make sure that the threads stay on topic without removing too many posts. It's a really difficult thing to do.

Another thing to keep in mind is that being wrong isn't against the rules.

I can't speak to exactly what happened but for example, with the post that you mod alerted the other day - the mod likely left it because, at the time, the existing posts weren't that bad/off topic/distracting/whatever, but as more posts were added, it turned into more of a debate and even less about the deal.

You may remember that we used to have a political forum (The Podium) and in part, it was closed because we do want to try to move away from what can often turn into arguing and name calling. I know sometimes it can seem like we don't do enough, but if people could see all of the posts that the mods handle daily, I think that they would be impressed with how many things they handle before it spirals.

Our rules and guidelines aren't set in stone, and we definitely do want to keep concerns like this in mind as we continue to define what is and isn't allowed. Please just keep mod alerting any posts that you see that may break the rules, and we'll keep doing our best.
